wherefore art thou selling?

2 years is about how long my dad normally keeps cars anyway. It’s about to turn 100k miles, he would want to get something different within the next 6 months so he decided to sell his car now, fix up and drive my car until I get back, and then buy something different.

“and driving dynamics set it apart from Audi, Mercedes, Lexus, Land Rover, and Cadillac.”
Not sure if intentional but that’s a really good way to add tags in the ad without being obnoxious like the #stancenation crowd
![]() 10/10/2016 at 15:48 |

Wow. Obviously a personal question, but does he finance them, or does he buy them out-right and then move on?
![]() 10/10/2016 at 15:49 |
|
That’s exactly what I was doing.
![]() 10/10/2016 at 15:49 |
|
I believe he finances them.

I couldn’t imagine the hassle of changing out cars every two or so years. I mean, I would love to, but I couldn’t deal with the paperwork and re-registration for all of that.
![]() 10/10/2016 at 15:53 |
|
Yeah. I think this is the second shortest he’s kept one in my lifetime. Usually 24-36 months is his norm.
![]() 10/10/2016 at 15:54 |
|
I should emphasize that a small part of this is him wanting a new car that often, but a much bigger part is the fact that he drives 25,000 miles a year.
![]() 10/10/2016 at 15:56 |
|
That is quite a lot of driving. I’ve recently cut back from 22k miles a year to probably 5k a year.

Excellent candidate for leasing rather than buying
![]() 10/10/2016 at 16:47 |

He just talked to the guy at BMW about it, basically he didn’t think there were favorable rates on leases with that kind of mileage but as it turns out there are. A lease may very well be in the future.

My daughter leased a Mazda 3 today, 0% financing and keeps her monthly payments pretty low. Apparently millenials are leasing rather than buying, they view cars much like an iPhone and I’m the old guy who buys and keeps his cars for a long time. When the lease is up hand over the keys and walk away, I’m guessing it won’t be long before she buys a tiny house? She bought the four door automatic even though I told her the hatch with manual was the way to go. I also yell at people who go anywhere near my lawn

Actually I had the price listed wrong, he wanted something different.

It’s a gem. Throttle is a bit touchy for my taste, but man that thing pulls for a crossover.

I feel like your dad just bought it.. What’s next?
![]() 10/10/2016 at 17:41 |

Right now the top contenders include the Genesis 5.0 and Equus, the Lexus LS460 and GS350, Cadillac CTS 3.6, Volvo XC70/S80, and Infiniti M56. Others too.

No german sedans? Did he have a bad experience with the X3?
![]() 10/10/2016 at 17:52 |
|
Yes and no. He loves the X3, but he basically wants to do one holdover car that will be a bit more reliable and less costly to run than something German, what with me in college and my brother soon to be. Basically this next car is also going to be a 2 year car, after which he’ll be very open to getting another German machine. For now, between paying for college or $140 oil changes, he’s going with college.

Makes sense. What about the Q60 or whatever they call it now? It’s been getting stellar reviews.
![]() 10/10/2016 at 19:34 |

The Infiniti Q60? That’s a coupe.
![]() 10/10/2016 at 20:22 |

Their midsize sedan, whatever it’s called.
![]() 10/10/2016 at 20:24 |

The Q50? Yeah he’s looking at that too, but I think the M37/M56/Q70 is a bit more likely.

I know this is on an old post, but has he considered leasing an i3? The 2 year lease numbers are really good, and since it’s new he’ll get free maintenance for the term of the lease.
But if he commutes far it doesn’t work due to range.
![]() 10/19/2016 at 22:38 |

He loves the i3, but drives 25,000 miles a year with plenty of that being long trips, so it’s out for now.
![]() 10/19/2016 at 23:02 |

Damn, thats a shame. But I’m glad that the car is picking up traction.
![]() 10/19/2016 at 23:14 |

Yup.
Also, with regards to the gentleman on my most recent post, he’s not worth it.
![]() 10/19/2016 at 23:24 |

It’s more about the car than him. The X3, especially in M-Sport trim with the 3.0 is an awesome drivers vehicle. Ridiculously useful, but still very good to drive.

True. Plus the brilliant 300hp N55 turbo six in ours was never available in the wagon.

So true. And now that the B58 is out, I keep hoping that BMW will be making an X3 M40i with it. But that remains to be seen if it will happen before the next generation (probably not).
